Find out more about a career in financial modelling at RSM.
The financial modelling team at RSM helps its clients to make sure that they have the robust tools available to help support their forecasting and decision making processes. We help them to do that through building and developing financial models for them, or taking their existing tools and reviewing them, or we provide training sessions and workshops.
I joined RSM 11 years ago and trained in the audit department. I then moved across to the corporate finance team, and then four years ago transferred to the specialist financial modelling team in London.
I think clients choose RSM because they really value the service that we provide, we've had some really good feedback recently from clients in relation to the reliability and responsiveness of the team - and that's really important when they're running up to deadlines, whether it be for a bid submission or financial close on a fundraising project. We also pride ourselves on making the process as easy as possible for our clients, because we know that it's often a really high-pressured time for them.
We work across a number of sectors, such as technology, transport, renewable energy and education to name just a few. That means that the work that we do is really varied. We could be working with large corporates, public sector organisations, or owner-managed businesses, but the really good thing is we're always dealing with the people in those organisations that are making the decisions - whether that be the CFO, the FD, or the business owner themselves. We're really encouraged to build those client relationships and are given the responsibility to do so.
For me, one of the most rewarding parts of working for RSM is being involved in some of the really important projects that our clients are working on, being involved in them from start to finish, and seeing that you've played a part and made a difference.
A recent highlight for me is working on a really large project with one of our biggest clients. I was involved in leading the team and co-ordinating multiple workstreams in order to get the project to bid submission. The real highlight was receiving the email of appreciation from the client at the end the project - it really makes all the hard work feel all the more worthwhile.
The other rewarding part for me is seeing the team grow and develop. When I joined the team four years ago there were nine of us, and we're now a growing team of 17. I may be biased, but I think that we have a really strong team here at RSM. It's brilliant technically, but it's also a very supportive team. That comes all the way from the partners, who really encourage individual development, but also to the graduates who are putting in a real effort to help the team get projects over the line.
