There was some uncertainty whether the Lifetime ISA, announced by the former Chancellor, George Osborne, would go ahead as planned. However, HMRC has now updated its technical note and confirmed that the new account will be available from April 2017. Savers looking for a tax efficient arrangement will therefore have an option of pension schemes, which are now more flexible than ever before, regular ISAs and Lifetime ISAs and will need to carefully weigh up the benefits of each.

ISA numbers down but deposits rise

Commenting on the latest ISA statistics released by HMRC today, Gary Heynes, RSM’s head of private client said:
‘The latest figures show that while there was an overall reduction in the numbers of people subscribing to ISAs in 2015-16, those with available funds took advantage of the increase in the annual limit to plough £80bn into their ISA accounts, £1bn more than in the previous year.

Significant changes for non doms from April 2017

HMRC released their update on the proposed changes for non-doms on Friday 19th August, together with some draft legislation. Despite rumours of delay or even postponement of these changes, following the uncertainty of the Brexit vote, it is clear that 6 April 2017 will be the start date for some very significant changes for non-doms in the UK and foreign owners of residential property.
