With the UK’s withdrawal from the EU just around the corner and a no-deal Brexit very much still a possibility, HMRC has published guidance on some of the practical challenges that could face UK businesses including reclaiming VAT from EU member states; VAT registration issues for consumer businesses selling digital services to the EU; and how to verify UK VAT registration details. Affected businesses must act now.

In our weekly tax brief issued on 15 May 2018 we reported on the shock lapse in the EU state aid approval for the Finance Act 2018 changes to the enterprise investment scheme and venture capital trusts, which delayed advance assurances for companies seeking to exploit these extremely welcome changes for knowledge-intensive companies.

In its July 2017 Fiscal Risks Report, the Office for Budget Responsibility identifies specific shocks or pressures that could result in the UK’s public finances not meeting forecasts, or which could threaten fiscal sustainability over the longer term. We’ve analysed the tax issues identified in the report and find that Brexit is not the only threat to tax revenues.
