Phil advises employers and individuals on the tax and social security implications of cross-border employment and international assignments. He works with businesses across all sectors with a particular focus on mid-market companies. Phil’s expertise covers residence, double tax treaties, assignment policy, tax equalisation, structuring individual assignments, optimising expat remuneration packages and advising on the tax implications of international benefits, share schemes and severance agreements. He also oversees employer and employee tax compliance, including international payroll obligations and the preparation of personal tax returns for assignees and senior executives.
Phil has 20 years' experience in global mobility gained across big four and mid-tier tax and accountancy firms, most recently heading up UK expatriate tax services for a top ten international network. His approach is to work closely with the client's payroll, finance and HR functions to ensure all aspects of a secondment operate in a cohesive, compliant and tax efficient manner. He has advised a broad portfolio of multinational businesses but especially enjoys the unique challenges of working with businesses undergoing rapid international expansion and those transferring employees overseas for the first time.
Phil is a regular speaker at client events and technical seminars, having also lectured at CIPD Reward and Lexis Nexis Expatriate Tax Planning conferences. He also has first-hand experience of international assignments, having practised in California for a period.
