Mike is a partner in our tax risk and investigation management team. He is a Chartered Tax Advisor, having qualified in 1987.

Mike oversees all types of tax investigation, including suspected serious fraud (COP9) cases, sensitive voluntary disclosures of tax irregularities and more basic HMRC compliance checks.   Having spent the first 10 years of his tax career in the Inland Revenue and as a former inspector of taxes, Mike’s all-round experience ensures that he can readily empathise with clients subjected to a broad range of HMRC interventions.

For many years Mike has assisted smaller firms of accountants in dealing with issues relating to HMRC challenges into their clients.

Mike is a supporter of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), which he seeks to encourage HMRC to embrace whenever possible to resolve a contentious tax dispute for a client through mediation.

Asked what motivates him in his working life, Mike says;

I am passionate about seeking to resolve tax disputes sensibly and ensuring clients are charged the correct amount of tax within the law. I enjoy helping clients understand and abide by the often incomprehensible rules of UK tax legislation. I always seek to build a rapport with HMRC Officers so it troubles me whenever the department adopts an aggressive or unreasonable approach to taxpayers who are genuinely trying their very best to get things right.

A long-standing member of the ICAEW’s Tax Investigations Practitioners Group and a former member of a joint agent / HMRC Working Together Group, Mike is well-known for participating in, and presenting at, educational events for fellow professionals and HMRC staff.

Mike is a regular contributor to Taxation Magazine, having penned many Tax Investigations related articles.  He has also been quoted in the national press and appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Radio 5 Live and on local radio.

Outside of work, Mike’s interests include entertaining his four grandchildren, domestic and overseas travel (when possible) and agonising over the Premiership fortunes of Brighton & Hove Albion, where he is a season ticket holder.
