About Lewis Tompkins
Lewis is an experienced Tax Partner at RSM UK, providing tax advisory services to private equity (PE) funds and venture capital (VC) firms.
He has in-depth experience of tax areas specific to PE/VC houses such as the disguised investment management fees (DIMF) rules and income-based carried interest (IBCI). His skillset covers partnership, corporate, and personal tax issues.
In addition, Lewis provides PE houses with practical advice on issues ranging from VAT grouping, withholding tax, co-invest funding and exit ordering, to designing tax information reporting for investors or other stakeholders.
Upon leaving university, Lewis joined RSM’s corporate tax team, where he completed his Chartered Tax Adviser and Association of Taxation qualifications, focussing on owner managed business clients.
He then spent a brief period working with professional services firms, before specialising in private equity in 2017.
Lewis’s approach to advising clients is to take a step back from the detail to understand the bigger picture and what his clients are trying to achieve commercially. This approach provides him with a broader perspective on the context, helping to align the challenge or opportunity with the client’s long-term goals.
"Each PE house and its executives are unique, with different commercial objectives, so tax structuring solutions should be equally bespoke."
Outside of work
Lewis is a busy dad, with a third little one on the way! When he’s not at work, he’s diving into dad duties, including coaching his son’s football teams. He also loves staying active as a triathlete, especially cycling through the stunning roads of Mallorca and Italy.
