RSM reacts to notional increase in car registrations in September

Alison Ashley, head of automotive at RSM said: ‘We normally expect an increase in car registrations in September as consumers look to secure the latest plate; but we are not in normal times, so many in the sector were expecting a dip. However, despite the headwinds, we have seen a marginal increase of just over 1 per cent, likely driven by pre-registrations and some notable improvement across individual marques on the back of new product launches. This is arguably better than expected but still only a notional increase which is unlikely to push the industry ahead of annual forecasts as manufacturers balance production and supply of the right vehicle mix and dealers struggle to match customer preference to allocation of vehicles. Dealer profitability through to the end of the year looks set to be a considerable challenge.’
