Staff at leading audit, tax and consulting firm RSM have collectively (and figuratively) travelled 54,829 miles by land and sea over 11 days to raise funds for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Starting on 9 September and finishing on 19 September (RSM World Day), staff at RSM embarked on a challenge to circumnavigate the globe (24,902 miles) without the use of motorised transport. So enthused by the challenge, RSM’s 3,800 staff throughout the UK took to walking, running, climbing, swimming, cycling, horse-riding, kayaking, roller-skating and zorbing not once, but twice around the world for good measure.
Offices were set mileage targets, with its Manchester team set the ambitious yet surmountable task of reaching 1,350 miles and surpassing it nearly four times over, whilst its Lerwick (Shetland Isles) office set out to reach 140 miles and achieved nearly double that. 16 of 30 offices that took part reached between double and five times their target. Every office comfortably surpassed its goal.
More recently, RSM sponsored and took part in the Duke of Edinburgh Adventure, a two day 50km hike across the Peak District National Park on Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October, with a campout at DofE’s 'Basecamp' on the Saturday night.
David Gwilliam, RSM chief operating officer said:
‘As a longstanding supporter of the DofE who operate in the same communities as we do, it’s been great to see all our offices so engaged with the Challenge, not to mention the more recent Adventure. For the former we set ourselves an ambitious task for a great cause, but one we were not only able to meet, but surpass so impressively. I’m delighted so many of us could raise funds and awareness for a charity that makes a huge difference in helping the lives of young people to gain the skills they need to succeed in life, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.’
For the past six decades, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has inspired and transformed the lives of millions of young people across the globe, from all backgrounds and circumstances.
From volunteering to physical activities, life skills to expeditions, achieving a DofE Award is a passport to a brighter future, valued by employers and universities.
