Commenting on the new look cabinet, Emily Sawicz, Director and Industrials Senior Analyst at RSM UK, said: “John Healey’s appointment as Chancellor, alongside Wes Streeting as Defence Secretary, is a positive signal for the defence investment plan, combining Treasury influence with renewed political focus on delivery.
“Early indications suggest the new government intends to increase defence investment while placing greater emphasis on supporting UK-based manufacturers and defence supply chains. If delivered, this could provide a meaningful boost for domestic industry, helping to strengthen manufacturing capacity, support skilled jobs and encourage investment and innovation across the wider industrial base.
“However, increased spending alone will not be enough. Success will depend on how effectively investment is translated into technological advancement, production capacity and workforce development. Many defence businesses continue to face challenges around skills availability, financing and delivery capacity, while major contractors are managing significant order backlogs.
“The key test for the new government will be providing the certainty needed for businesses to invest with confidence. A stable pipeline of defence projects, combined with a clear commitment to domestic procurement, would help unlock investment and maximise the economic benefits of increased defence spending across the UK.”
