Charity sector growth highlights need for strong governance

Andrie Kazamias, Tax Director at RSM UK, comments on the Charity Commission’s 2025-26 annual report and accounts:

“The Charity Commission’s latest report highlights the strength and resilience of the charity sector. Record registration applications and rising income levels show that charities remain an essential force for social and economic good, despite facing increasing economic pressures, funding uncertainties and rising demand for services.

“However, growth brings additional responsibility. The increase in compliance activity, regulatory intervention and governance-related concerns shows that charities are operating in a more complex environment than ever before. Strong governance is no longer simply about meeting regulatory requirements; it is fundamental to maintaining public trust, protecting reputation and delivering meaningful impact.

“As charities evolve and navigate emerging challenges, trustees need access to trusted advice, effective governance frameworks and specialist expertise to support good decision-making. Investment in governance shouldn’t be viewed as a compliance cost, but as a strategic investment in long-term sustainability and resilience."
