Aviva results: diversification increases resilience against ongoing economic pressures

Hugh Fairclough, partner and head of financial services at RSM UK, comments on Aviva’s half-year results: “Aviva has undergone one of the most significant transformations in the UK financial services sector. Today's results suggest the business is entering a new phase, shifting its focus from restructuring towards delivering growth from its strengthened market proposition.

"The acquisition of Direct Line reinforced Aviva's position as one of the UK's largest insurers and materially increased its scale. The question for investors now is whether that increased scale can be translated into stronger earnings, deeper customer relationships and sustainable long-term growth.

"Aviva has positioned itself well in an increasingly complex market. Insurers are facing economic uncertainty, geopolitical instability and growing climate-related risks, all of which can challenge profitability and business models. Aviva's presence across general insurance, wealth, pensions and retirement provides a level of diversification that may offer greater resilience than more narrowly focused competitors, although that will inevitably be tested as market conditions evolve.

“Unlike many insurers, Aviva has built meaningful scale in both wealth accumulation and retirement solutions. Through its workplace pensions and wealth businesses, the group is able to capture assets as customers build long-term savings, while its retirement franchise provides opportunities to retain and support those customers as they move into decumulation. This means Aviva is increasingly positioned to benefit from long-term demographic trends, whether customers are saving for retirement or drawing income from it.

“Looking ahead, the key challenge will be converting this strategic advantage into stronger, more diversified earnings growth. Continued underwriting discipline, delivery of Direct Line synergies and sustained growth across wealth and retirement will be critical. If successful, Aviva's greatest competitive advantage may not be any individual business line, but its ability to participate in a larger share of customers' financial lives, from accumulation through to retirement.

"While General Insurance remains the primary earnings engine today, the longer-term significance of these results is the way Aviva is positioning itself across the entire savings lifecycle."
