Affordable Housing Supply data: 1% uptick not enough to meet ambitious Government targets

As the Government publishes its latest Affordable Housing Supply in England report, RSM UK says there is still work needed to enable it to reach its ambitious 1.5 million homes target.

John Guest, national head of social housing, RSM UK said: “The Government has a big aspirational goal to build 1.5 million homes before the end of this parliament. There are 300,000 social and affordable homes planned supported by a £39bn Social and Affordable Homes Programme. Experts estimate 90,000 new affordable homes are needed each year to meet targets. With only a 1% rise in the number of affordable homes built this year, equating to 64,762 homes, this is not nearly enough to meet these needs.

“Despite the positive sentiment for social housing growth expressed by the government in this year’s Spending Review, there is still an enormous amount of work to be done, and funding needed, to boost housing supply in the social housing sector. The question remains, when might we see the benefit of the funding promised making its way into the housing supply chain?”
