Admiral results: claims inflation outpaces premium growth

Commenting on Admiral’s half year results today, Erin Sims, Financial Services Senior Analyst at RSM UK said: “As a bellwether for the UK motor insurance sector, Admiral's results reinforce the importance of disciplined underwriting, as insurers navigate continued claims inflation and an increasingly competitive market.

“While motor insurance premiums appear to have stabilised, claims costs continue to be driven upwards by increasingly complex vehicle technology, higher repair costs and supply chain pressures. The key question for the sector is whether current pricing levels will prove sufficient to support long-term profitability. Admiral's results suggest further premium increases may still be required across the wider market if insurers are to keep pace with ongoing claims inflation. As one of the sector's leading operators, Admiral's results offer a useful gauge of how the wider market is responding to these pressures.

“Technology is also becoming an increasingly important differentiator. Admiral's recent acquisition of Flock, the fleet insurtech company, also highlights a wider trend across the market. Motor insurers are increasingly investing in technology that provides richer data and greater insight into driver behaviour, helping them better understand, price and manage risk. If premium increases defined the last phase of the market cycle, technology and data may well define the next.”
