Work experience case study: Rachel Garnett
Rachel joined RSM on a one-week work experience placement in August last year. During her time at the Leeds office, she got to grips with the day-to-day operations of a range of service areas, including tax, audit, corporate finance and risk advisory.
Rachel has now joined the firm on a permanent basis as a graduate trainee in the Newcastle office.
Why did you apply for a work shadowing placement?
I’d always thought about a career in accountancy but I wasn’t completely sure what it would involve. Before diving in, I wanted to get some work experience that would help me decide if it was what I really wanted to do every day.
What was the application process like?
I asked about work experience placements at several firms but found RSM was the only one offering the short-term option that I was looking for. I thought the application process would be long and daunting, but it was actually really simple and I heard back straight away.
The team at RSM were really accommodating, making sure to fit me in for the week that was most convenient for me. They also sent an information pack that answered all my questions before I started, so I felt much more relaxed about going into the work place for the first time.
What did you get up to at RSM?
During the week I got to spend time in six departments across the firm. I saw all sorts of roles and types of work that is done in an accountancy firm, some of which I had no idea existed before going in.
Each day I was partnered with a trainee who showed me what their role entails. It was really helpful to be able to talk to people who had been in my situation. I was also given pieces of work that a trainee would do so I got real insight into whether I would enjoy the work or not.
What did you learn?
My week at RSM helped me realise that a career in accountancy was for me. Spending time in all the different departments highlighted the areas of accountancy that I found the most interesting. This helped guide me into the role that I feel I am best suited to and will really enjoy.
Having been a part of the working environment for a week, I knew that RSM was a firm that I would love to work at and would offer the supportive, progressive and friendly atmosphere I was looking for. I’m now excited to be starting as a graduate audit trainee in Newcastle. I couldn't recommend the work experience programme at RSM highly enough and would encourage anyone who has ever thought accountancy could be for them to come and try it.
