What do you do at RSM?

I am a supervisor within the accounting and business advisory team. On a typical day I prepare and review a company’s year-end accounts, as well as produce VAT returns and management accounts. I am also responsible for supervising new assistants who join and helping them progress within the department.

What’s it like to work at RSM?

RSM is a great place to work as it’s focused on supporting and motivating employees through team-building days and social events. The firm also encourages inter-office working so there’s lots of opportunity to meet colleagues from across the network.

What do you like most about the company?

I like being part of a team and the opportunities I have been given to develop my skills and further my career. I have progressed a lot within my department over the past few years, learning how to deal with problems and working to deadlines. Our client base is diverse, so I’ve had the chance to learn first-hand about lots of different types of business and industry sectors. I also love meeting new clients and visiting their offices.

Why did you choose RSM?

I joined RSM on the school leaver programme nearly five years ago as I didn’t want to go to university. I knew I wanted to become a chartered accountant, and this route offered the right mix of practical experience and theoretical training that I needed  to progress within the industry. Although it can sometimes be difficult preparing for professional exams and working at the same time, I now have practical experience that I would never have got studying at university.

What are your tips for success?

It definitely helps to be very keen and hard working. It’s important to be organised and communicate well with your manager if you’re struggling. Time management is also vital in order to be successful within the accountancy sector.
