Name: Amy Whitehead
Job title: Digital Communications Co-ordinator
Office: London
Joining date: February 2016 (recruitment)/January 2018 (marketing)
Team: Marketing - Communications
Summary of role
I work in the digital marketing team at RSM, focussing on the website. I create web pages for articles and campaigns, work on the format of the website and how it looks, and make sure that the wording is optimised for SEO (so that RSM shows up in google searches). My role additionally entails working on the careers site, and I also work on wider projects for the website - for example personalisation which ensures that readers are shown content that’s most relevant to them first. I get involved with social media, email marketing, and help to set up webinars as well.
What’s been the highlight so far?
Definitely moving to the marketing team. When I first joined RSM in 2016 I worked in the London recruitment team. I did some recruitment for the digital team and got a lot more interested in it, so did some more research into what working in this team would entail. After doing this, I realised that I would definitely be interested in a career in marketing, particularly on the digital side.
I talked to my manager about this, and he was very supportive. He started giving me tasks that related to both digital marketing and recruitment, and tailored my appraisal objectives to encourage this. I was heavily involved in an employer brand project that bulked out my CV and helped me to get the job I now have in the marketing team.
What’s been your biggest challenge so far?
Moving teams was quite daunting, especially as I didn’t know the ins and outs of the role I was starting in. But the team was extremely welcoming, and I settled in very quickly. It has also been a challenge learning about how to work on a website, but it’s an exciting one.
What’s surprised you most about working at RSM?
How social it is. Coming into an accountancy firm I was expecting the stereotype of an overly-corporate office, but it’s actually very friendly and open. There’s a lot of social events – the summer sports day, Christmas party, various sports teams etc. Teams also often go for drinks after work.
What’s next for you at RSM?
I’m learning more and more every day so that’s the focus for me for now. I hope to become a marketing prodigy in the near future!
What’s your top tip for someone looking to apply to RSM?
Be yourself in the interview. The RSM mantra of ‘personalities wanted’ is very true – qualifications and experience only get you so far. We’re looking for people to join who want to develop themselves as well as the firm, and give the job their all.
Also, after looking at a few too many of them over the years – please spell check your CV!
