Moving forward at RSM

Name: Joshvir Uppal
Job title: Accounting and Business Advisory Assistant
Office: Birmingham
Joining date: 13 March 2017
Team: AFR

Summary of role

My role as an ABA assistant involves many different responsibilities, such as preparing accounts for different sized companies. In order to complete this for a smaller sized company I will summarise the client’s transactions during the period into a spreadsheet and input the data into computer software. Whereas, for larger clients, they would typically have their own internal procedures and I will input the data based on their calculations.

I also complete numerous VAT returns to calculate the VAT payable to or due from HMRC. Another service which is also a HMRC requirement is iXBRL tagging - where we must use computer software to 'tag' a set of accounts in order to make them compliant with HMRC regulations.

I am now developing my knowledge on how to prepare a set of pension scheme accounts and hope that in the future this could be an area I can specialise in.

What’s been the highlight so far?

The key highlight so far has been passing my AAT Level 3 qualification at 17 years old, as I had originally joined the firm when I was just 16.

I joined through the Leadership through Sport and Business programme. You can read more about my journey here

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge has been balancing my study/work life. To overcome this, I made sure I was organised and managed my time effectively which helped me pass my exams and complete work to the best of my ability.

What’s surprised you most about working at RSM?

What surprised me the most was the responsibility I was given when I first joined, but also how quickly you can develop and move forward within RSM. I have been at RSM for just over one year and have already taken a more supervisory role by training and assisting the staff who have joined after me.

What’s next for you at RSM?

So, next will be to pass the AAT Level 4 exams and then progress on to my ACA qualification, whilst also developing my experience in preparing more complex accounts. A lot to look forward to!

What’s your top tip for someone looking to apply to RSM?

My advice for anyone that is joining RSM would be just be yourself in the interview stage and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s not all about having the highest grade - it’s about having the skills to undertake any challenge you may face in an accountancy career.
